Overview of the chemical industry of the Siberian Federal District

The Siberian Federal District (SFD) is an administrative unit in the Siberian part of Russian Federation, formed by presidential decree of 13 May, 2000. The area is 5145.0 km2 or 30% of the area of RF (second place after the Far Eastern Federal District). It includes 12 subjects of RF, in particular, the four republics, three territories, and five regions.

There are many large chemical companies on the territory of the district, well-known far beyond Russia's borders, which are support of the modern economy of the country.

An important distinguishing feature of the chemical industry of Siberia is the combined enterprises. Thus, coke enterprises, plants for the production of nitrogen fertilisers, plastics (i.e., West Siberian Metallurgical Works JSC, Novokuzneck Metallurgy Plant JSC) are formed on the basis of many metallurgical complexes. Large chemical centers include Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Irkutsk, Tomsk, Omsk and Krasnoyarsk. Currently, the contribution of the chemical industry in Siberian GDP is about 2.9% (RUB 87,448m). This indicator provides the region 5th place among the other subjects of the RF for the manufacturing and chemical production, and output of rubber and plastiс goods.
