Dow Chemical is to close its polystyrene facility in the UK by the end of t his year. The plant, in Barry in South Wales, employs 24 people. Dow said that the plant had long operated below its 75,000tpa capacity. The Barry closure will reduce Dow’s European PS capacity to around 550,000tpa. Dow is not the only company to have trimmed PS capacity recently: last year, Atofina (now Total Petrochemicals) cut capacity in the UK, while BASF closed a PS compounding plant.
