Fire Outbreak at Stavrolen

On 15 December, 2011, fire outbreak occured at an ethylene plant of a gas separation workshop of Stavrolen Ltd, a subsidiary of Lukoil JSC (Budyonnovsk, Stavropol territory), as the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has reported.

Upon firefighters arrived at the place, it was detected that a compression unit of a furnace was on fire. A total of 84 people and 20 units of fire fighting equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire. Ten workers of the workshop were evacuated. As a result of the accident, seven people were injured. All victims have been taken to the Budyonnovsk central regional hospital. The fire was localised in two hours.

The accident has been reported to pose no threat to the company's personnel and the city of Budyonnovsk as well as to its environment.

Currently the company is working on restarting production. A special commission formed by the state supervisory agencies will investigate the accident.

Stavrolen, a member of Lukoil-Neftekhim Group, is engaged in the production of HDPE and MDPE grades by UNIPOL technology. The company is one of the largest producers of these PE grades in Russia.
