The Russian and Ukrainian Toluene Markets

Toluene (methylbenzene, C6H5CH3) finds relatively restricted application in the chemical industry, though it is quite a valuable feedstock. In paricular, it would be impossible to obtain some polyurethanes and explosives without it. Currently, demand for toluene in the world is far lower than its production volumes. Therefore, most of C6H5CH3 produced at oil refineries is processed into benzene and xylene, aromatic hydrocarbons that are more required on the market. However, in the CIS toluene converting is still not developed. In Russia, toluene is manufactured by 11 companies, of which four produce toluene from coal. Ukraine features only two toluene makers.

The article analyses factors influencing the toluene markets of both countries.
